Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar Fasciitis is a common cause of heel pain in runners and walkers. Pain is typically at its worst during your first few steps in the morning or right after an extended period of sitting or resting. Pain can also be present at the end of a run or end of the day, due to fatigue. Risk factors for developing plantar fasciitis include limited calf flexibility, being overweight, and age.

Managing Pain from Plantar Fasciitis:

  1. Decrease you running
  2. Ice the injured area
  3. Take a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) such as ibuprofen.
  4. Cross friction massage
  5. Insert soft heel pad or cushioned insole in your shoe

Treating Plantar Fasciitis

  1. Improve flexibility in your calf muscles
  2. Improve the strength of plantar-flexing muscles, especially in eccentric contraction
  3. Night splints (for severe cases)
  4. Steroid injection (for severe cases)
  5. Shockwave therapy (for severe cases)
